Scope of the job

As Team Leader Bioinformatics Data Sciences, you will work on new applications of machine learning, establish platforms for storage of large scale 'omics and research data for a variety of projects in the fields of inflammation, fibrosis and autoimmune diseases.
You will join a dynamic bioinformatics team with 'omics analysis, pathway analytics, and disease experts to develop new algorithms and innovative strategies for the analysis of very large and heterogeneous ‘omics data-sets in the context of drug discovery. This also implies collaborating with different stakeholders within the disease areas, with other computational teams, vendors and academic researchers. Leading your team by motivating and empowering each team member is key, as well as skillfully managing the workload and resources needed.


We are looking for someone who can:

  • Combine hands on work with building and managing a data sciences team in the bioinformatics group. Act as an influencer by providing scientific recommendations within and across teams.
  • Develop and set up new tools, platforms, algorithms, and machine learning techniques for the integrative analysis of large omics, clinical and public data-sets.
  • Unlock the potential of large public research data by integrating this with in-house data and by bringing tools and solutions to our end users.
  • Participate in the development of a platform for genomics-based target discovery and generate meaningful biological hypothesis from genomics data.
  • Act as a role model for its own team by offering guidance and support.
  • Depending on the projects, act as an expert, project member or project leader for the own area of expertise.
  • Actively follow recent literature and ensure that a broad knowledge of the specific area is present.
  • Organize the workload and resources of the team
  • Take accountability for the correct implementation of Galapagos' values, behaviours, processes and the overall way of working of his/her own team.

You will actively collaborate with disease area heads, ITS teams, vendors and academic partners.


Job requirements

This job requires a PhD in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Biology, Genetics or an equivalent scientific discipline with 5 to 8 years of relevant experience, together with 10 years of experience in computational biology or data science, ideally obtained in the pharmaceutical industry and drug development. Demonstrated leadership and management skills are desired, as well as demonstrated experience with cloud computing (Amazon AWS). You have built up a strong background and publication record with proven high levels of performance.

You are able to innovate, develop and apply new tools for the integrative analysis and visualization of multiple high-dimensional genomics data-sets. You are proficient with R, Python or other scripting languages. You acquired strong experience with data sciences tools, platforms and algorithms (deep learning, Bayesian modelling, time series analysis, latent variable models and more). A background in systems immunology, systems biology and/or single cell genomics and/or immunology of autoimmune disease is a plus. Another asset is experience with deep learning (TensorFlow, Keras, PyTorch or similar frameworks). Skills in semantic data and ontology management, linked data, open data is a strong plus. 

You are a team player with an objectives-driven mind-set, able to work autonomously. You have excellent organization and communication skills that help you delegate and empower people. Last but not least, you are fluent in English, both written and spoken.
