We are looking for a Shared Services Counsel (HR focus), Mechelen - Belgium
Scope of the job
For our Legal Department at Galapagos’ headquarters, we are looking for a Legal Counsel focusing on Shared Services, with a strong background in international employment and reward law and an affinity with commercial transactions, IT contracts and other shared services projects.
For the HR part, you will act as Employment Counsel where the key objective is to guarantee the best possible employment terms (contracts, salary package, bonus, benefits) for Galapagos’ workforce aligning policies and regulations with company values and ensuring a correct adoption of European and national labor legislation for the currently 8 European entities, as well as our limited US footprint.
While your main focus will be on HR, you’ll work on a wide variety of commercial agreements across the shared services organization (HR, Procurement, Finance, etc.).
Together with your internal clients you’ll develop and coordinate a Pan-European approach in regard to social and labor law related matters. You work closely together with the HR team on both individual and collective employment law issues, such as employment contracts and other employment documentation, works council procedures, disciplinaries and terminations, employment disputes, M&A projects, outsourcing and corporate restructurings.
An essential part of this role is to harmonize and coordinate Galapagos’ HR policies, procedures and best practices for all locations. Furthermore, you will guide and assist in setting up operations in new commercial entities across Europe. To support the growth of our entities in the different locations, you’ll liaise with external legal counsels to provide local expertise and ensure changes in employment legislation, regulations, guidelines and practices are evaluated and implemented as required. Diligently bringing internal clients and other stakeholders on the same page, you work towards successful implementations of local practices and resolve individual cases as needed.
You identify common practices throughout the countries and support the standardization where possible. To foster growth, you develop and moderate trainings for internal audiences. You also take care of implementing and managing strategic projects with legal and HR implications. As an expert in CSR (corporate social responsibility) you promote inclusion and diversity.
Who are you?
Our ideal candidate is a ‘do-er’ and ‘thinker’ with a master’s degree in Law, preferably specialized in employment law. You have at least 5 years of relevant experience gained in an in-house counsel role in an international company. Agility is your middle name and you enjoy being part of a fast growing and changing environment. You are a well-rounded lawyer with the ambition to work on a variety of legal topics (such as HR, IT, communications, facilities, EHS, finance). You have proven experience in providing legal advice on HR matters and in drafting commercial agreements. You are a problem-solver who can act decisively while maintaining high integrity. Relationship building is one of your strength and evolving in an international environment stimulates your productivity. To make sure you connect with the whole Galapagos community you communicate fluently in English.
