Senior Scientist Bioinformatics - Transcriptomics Integration - BE/Mechelen


Scope of the job

As a member of the Bioinformatics team, the senior scientist contributes by evaluating and developing novel algorithms, pipelines and approaches for omics analysis. This covers single cell sequencing analysis and other omics-platforms, machine learning, data analysis, visualization and exploration. Depending on the projects you will work on scientific research, collaborate with vendors, academic partners and/or consultants.


More in detail, we are looking for someone who can:

    • Apply cutting-edge bioinformatics and machine learning approaches to integrate transcriptomic and single cell sequencing data with a wide variety of multi-omics and other data-sets to identify mechanisms of disease and novel targets.
    • Manage, prioritize and integrate the different stakeholder requirements and create scalable solutions and analytics pipelines to support the whole Galapagos research organization.
    • Develop and implement novel analytical approaches to integrate analysis of (single cell) sequencing data into diverse multi-layered data types to identify novel drug targets, predictive biomarker panels and therapeutic mechanisms.
    • Help develop translational research and help translate model organism to human applications.
    • Analyze, integrate, and interpret high dimensional data from a variety of high-throughput platforms and data-sources (internal or public).
    • Contribute to the general development of in-house bioinformatics platforms and capabilities.
    • Integrate omics analysis pipelines with pathway and network analytics, bayesia statistical models, machine learning approaches on internal and public data.
    • Bring scientific excellence and innovate with novel analytical methodologies, tools and applications.
    • Maintain and expand knowledge of high-throughput genomic data sources.
    • Use gwas, epigenetics, and other omics data types to increase dimensions in transcriptomics analysis outcome
    • Grant writing and dissemination of scientific results (internal/external).

    You are part of the Bioinformatics team and you will collaborate with various stakeholders in the research organization, including disease experts, lab biologists and bioinformatics team members. You function as a scientific expert and point of contact within your areas of expertise.

    Job requirements

    This job requires a PhD in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Biology, Physics, Mathematics, Genetics or an equivalent scientific discipline, with 3 to 5 years of experience in computational biology or data science and a specialization in machine learning or deep learning and / or Bayesian models. You have a strong scientific background and publication record with proven high levels of performance. You are able to innovate, develop and apply new tools for the integrative analysis and visualization of multiple high-dimensional transcriptomics and single cell sequencing datasets. You are proficient with R, Python and other scripting languages and are experienced with workflow automation. Next to this, you have an excellent background in bioinformatics packages (Bioconductor, SciPy etc.) and strong experience with machine learning (deep learning, Bayesian modelling, time series analysis, latent variable models and more). You have know-how of TensorFlow, Keras, PyTorch or a similar framework. It’s a plus if you have a background in systems immunology, systems biology and/or single cell genomics and/or immunology of autoimmune disease. Experience with cloud computing is an important asset.

    For this role, familiarity with the key research areas of Galapagos (inflammatory and fibrosis-related diseases) is desired. You have experience with large-scale computational analysis like high-performance computing cluster or cloud environment, together with working proficiency in UNIX/Linux. You are experienced in creating and using containerized computing and implementing complex data workflows.

    You go fast alone, but far together. Building and maintaining strong and sustainable relationships with key stakeholders through timely interactions is important to you. Your communication style is clear when you present analysis of results. As a team player, you promote an open and supportive climate and a collaborative spirit. You are well organized, able to handle multiple tasks and projects. Last but not least, you are fluent in English, both written and spoken.
