Senior Scientist Bioinformatics Multi Omics Integration - Mechelen,BE/Romainville,FR/Basel,CH/Leiden,NL

Scope of the job

You contribute to the building and using of cutting-edge computational approaches that structure and integrate a wide variety of multi-omic datasets at scale. You match the right analytics approaches to appropriately harmonized large-scale data and develop large-scale cross-disease and pathway-centric analytics approaches based on FAIR principles. These analytics activities will lead to the identification of novel modes of action and nominate innovative drug targets. 

More in detail we are looking for someone to:

  • Deliver cutting-edge reproducible and scalable analytics solutions in accordance with the project requirements and timelines.
  • Design, build and execute bioinformatic pipelines that integrate high dimensional data from a wide variety of high-throughput platforms and data-sources
  • Build scalable and reproducible analysis pipelines to uncover cross-disease patterns from multi-omic measurements
  • Help reveal multidimensional perturbations for pathway-centric drug discovery
  • Translate findings to assay development and discovery teams and suggest ideas and innovation for novel assay design
  • Propose and implement novel methods for disease area leaders in drug discovery to advance understanding of newly emerging therapeutic targets
  • Be the point of contact as an expert and develop novel and innovative predictive models using mathematical, machine learning/artificial intelligence or statistical approaches
  • Maintain and expand an expert level on novel modelling formalism theory, computational techniques, machine learning and AI
  • Supervise external activities and use vendor solutions to support creation of a large-scale harmonized ‘multi-omics knowledge commons'
  • Actively collaborate with other areas of expertise to leverage the complexity of multi-omic data in its multiple regulatory dimensions ranging from transcriptional to post-translational

You will communicate and interface with Disease Area heads and lab scientists, both in scientific and strategic meetings. In addition, you will closely collaborate with ITS teams, vendors and consultants.

Job requirements

For this job, a PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Systems Biology or a similar discipline is required, with 3 to 5 years’ relevant experience. You have a strong understanding of high-dimensional human data, transcript omics, human genetics and methods of generating and analysing data. You master computer programming skills and have experience with common bioinformatics programming languages (e.g. Python, R, Bash). A good understanding of statistical methods (Bayesian, probabilistic programming, Gaussian processes) and graphical models is desired. It’s a plus if you have built up experience with machine learning methods, for example neural networks, random forests, SVMs, regression, clustering, dimensionality reduction or ensemble methods, as well as having experience in developing algorithms and workflows at scale in cloud environments. Next to this, you have a good understanding of NGS techniques, multiple omics and analytical approaches for analysis of combined multi-omics and multimodal data sets. Finally, you are able to write grant proposals and manuscripts for publication and you maintain a record of high-quality peer reviewed publications and oral presentations in a relevant field.

Good communicative skills are key for this role, as you will be building and maintaining strong and sustainable relationships with key stakeholders. You know how to manage projects with different priorities by tracking progress and managing expectations. To keep track of major milestones or phases of work, you provide an oversight to your colleagues with project management software. As a team player, you promote an open and supportive climate and a collaborative spirit.
Finally, you are fluent in English, both written and spoken.
