We are looking for a R&D Operations Project Manager


Scope of the job

As R&D Operations Project Manager you are responsible for managing capability building projects within Galapagos’ R&D and Shared Services Organisations and occasionally beyond. Such projects can be of functional or cross-functional nature and therefore exhibit multiple levels of complexity from both a content and a stakeholder perspective. You develop and implement ways-of-working, processes and procedures that enable the R&D Organization to drive effective and compliant drug development operations and that support other parts of the organization to build world-class capabilities.

We are looking for someone with an inquisitive nature and an ability to build strong relationships with leaders and functional experts. In addition, experience in (bio)pharma and product development, is ideal to make it happen in this role. This is an exciting opportunity for a Project Manager keen on playing a key role in establishing and further developing/maturing Galapagos’ project management capabilities.


Your principal accountabilities:

Manage assigned projects according to good project management practices; exemplify a professional i.e. customer oriented, structured and disciplined approach to project management:

  • Partner with functional experts and leaders to develop and agree the projects’ scope and plan, to drive project endorsement and execution including regular status/progress reporting to stakeholders
    • Coordinate internal and external resources including third parties (where applicable) associated with assigned project(s)
    • Develop, agree and implement appropriate metrics and required tools to enable regular project status/progress reporting and remediation actions (when necessary)
    • Proactively assess the project’s impact on the Organization to inform the project’s stakeholder management, change management and communication approaches
    • Drive successful submissions and presentations for leadership review committees, including, when appropriate presenting to upper management.
  • Liaise across Galapagos’ project management organizations and contribute establishing and further developing/maturing the Galapagos R&D PMO by exemplifying good project management practices and leadership and share lessons-learned within and beyond the R&D PMO (where applicable).
  • Adhere to existing company Policies and Procedures and ensure timely completion of assigned training.

  • The R&D Operations Project Manager reports to the Head of Project Management Operations.

Job requirements

  • Master of Science (MSc) or a Bachelors with equivalent experience.
  • Experience in project/program management in the life-science/biotech/pharmaceutical industry.
  • Project management certification such as PMP is a plus
  • Experience in leading (cross functional) project teams
  • Experience across multiple Drug Development disciplines (i.e. pre-clinical through to clinical phase 3 development and registration) is highly valued
  • Skilled at analysing gaps, defining the status of processes and being a driving force in moving projects forward.
  • Advanced knowledge of information systems and business processes for project and portfolio management.
  • Collaboration and building bridges are in your DNA, you have strong interpersonal and stakeholder management skills. You can create trust among individuals with diverse backgrounds and are able to operate effectively across organizational boundaries.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • You can demonstrate your ability to think strategically and tactically. You nurture innovation and support teams to make innovation a reality.

  • Fluency in English, knowledge of Dutch is a plus.
  • Based in Mechelen, Belgium or in Basel, Switzerland .
