Your role

You lead and manage the teams, resources and activities assigned to your area. Expert advisor to the VP Head of Disease Biology, you play a central role in designing and implementing biomarker strategies for the projects both in Discovery and in Development (Ph1 and Ph2a), aimed at gaining insights on target engagement, mode-of-action as well as efficacy for advanced molecules. These activities are key for building the adequate mechanistic insights for the first-in-class therapeutics developed at Galapagos, providing the key information to position these in the competitive landscape. Activities of the Translational Research team spans across therapeutic areas, with a focus on immune-inflammation, fibrosis and kidney diseases. Another angle of the role is to support the backtranslation strategy in place at Galapagos, aiming at bringing disease insights back to the research process through the collection of patient-based datasets.

For your area, you design the scientific and organizational strategy to achieve the objectives of the Disease Biology division. For active drug discovery projects, you operate in a matrix environment and synchronizes the activities of his/her team with other Departments, within or outside the disease group. You have the central role at the interface between the Discovery and Development departments and will overview biomarker activities (up to Ph2a) Finally, you are  also expected to set up external academic collaborations to sharpen Galapagos’ disease and pathway knowledge.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Act at the interphase between Discovery and Development divisions, driving
    • the strategic design of biomarker plans aimed at documenting target engagement and impact on disease
    • the execution of biomarker activities for projects from late Research (Lead optimisation) into early Development phases (including Ph2a)
  • Support the ‘bed to bench’ strategy, collecting patient samples and datasets to support the strengthening of disease knowledge
  • Build a transparent and compliant environment towards stakeholders, allowing these to understand and follow progress with regards to biomarker activities in their project
  • Draft implementation plans related to the biomarker strategy for your own department (scientific expertise, technical capabilities and resources) to deliver against pre-set objectives
  • Act as an advisor to the VP Head Disease Area in the field of scientific strategy, budget and resources,
  • Lead, manage and coordinate a team of ~15 scientists appointed to your department, by motivating and empowering the team members; ensure the implementation of the corporate culture; ensure smooth communication and interactions within your own group and towards stakeholders; ensure team member’s development by your leadership and coaching abilities
  • Act as a senior representative of the company by developing the appropriate external and internal network; ensure an efficient and smooth communication within your team and towards the corporate partners,
  • Set up and manage academic collaborations

Job requirements

Who are you?

  • Ph.D. with at least 10 years drug discovery experience
  • Knowledge of the drug discovery process supported by a demonstrated track record of delivery and leadership in advanced drug discovery projects, including early development phases
  • Experience in the development and validation of biomarkers in different types of biological matrices. A strong pharmacology background is desired. An affinity with state-of-the art ‘omics’ technologies is an advantage
  • Experience in the processes behind early development projects.
  • Knowledge of Translational concepts supporting the progress of new molecules, as e.g. PK/PD relationships,…
  • Scientific expertise in the biology underlying inflammatory and/or fibrotic processes is an advantage.
  • Excellent proven leadership skills, with the ability to influence, motivate and empower.
  • With a strategic view, you are able to act as an advisor and influencer of top management and the teams.
  • Creative and critical thinker. Able to build a synthetic view on literature in the field.
