We are looking for an EHS Director - Mechelen,BE

 

You are responsible and accountable for developing, implementing, maintaining and ensuring the continued effectiveness of the Environmental, Health and Safety Management System programs within Galapagos. This is a key role  and provides strategical direction.

In this role you will:

  • Define the Global Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) strategies for all Galapagos operations (R&D and Commercial activities).
  • Establish and maintain Global Corporate standards, training and KPI’s to ensure the Environmental, Health, and Safety of GLPG employees (and its guests) and the organization complies with the applicable European and local regulations and or requirements.( in line with ISO 14001 & 45001 certifications)
  • Deployment and implementation of a robust (Global) EHS system. Works closely with the local teams and oversees continual compliance and improvements.
  • Ensure EHS compliance of both internal and external regulatory; by the introduction of internal/external audits, site visits and (corrective) follow-up plans.
  • Provide regular updating of appropriate documentation and for liaising with local, regional and or global teams.
  • Oversee near miss, incident, injury, or illness investigations completed by EHS personnel to ensure that true root causes are discovered and effective corrective actions are developed, implemented and that gained knowledge is shared.
  • Manage and develop a strong team of EHS professionals working within multiple levels of the organization (Leadership and non-Management employees) across the multiple stages of operation.
  • Have leadership responsibilities for EHS staff and budget.
  • Build relationships at all levels across the organization, including local Leadership.
  • Provide assistance and support for EHS consultation and recommendations to project(s) throughout all phases of site construction and operation.
  • Develop an EHS platform where best practice sharing and continue improvement is common practice
  • Define the future Global EHS operating model 
  • Travel frequently throughout the various countries

Job requirements

Who are you?

  • Minimum 10 to 15 years of progressively responsible experience within Environmental, Health, and Safety in an international organization.
  • Comprehensive experience in applied EHS for chemical/biological products, preferably in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry.
  • Be global leader with a start-up mentality
  • A strong working knowledge of European regulatory compliance requirements; able to professionally represent the company when dealing with external organizations, regulatory bodies and with all organizational levels internally.
  • A strong working knowledge of ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 standards as well as the ability to implement and maintain safety programs in accordance with these standards
  • Must be comfortable dealing with a strong management team and able to positively influence the group when necessary.
  • Must be able to lead cross-functional teams for the purpose of evaluating and continually improving the Global EHS Management System
  • Extensive knowledge with program and permit audits / inspections, including monitoring report submissions, record keeping, action- item resolution and KPI management.
  • Be a change agent.
  • Fluent in English and Dutch (verbally as well in writing)
