We are looking for a Director of Modulation and New Modalities - Mechelen,BE/Romainville,FR


Scope of the job

You will lead and manage the teams involved in all aspects of target and pathway based modulation (Protein sciences, assay development, new modalities and technology development teams). You will design the scientific and organizational strategy, focused on the modulation approaches for all targets and pathways in drug discovery, to develop new competitive therapeutic compounds/drugs. You lead the implementation of this strategy within its own teams and is responsible for the proper transfer, teamwork and communication between the Discovery Areas.

We are looking for someone who can: 

  • Design the scientific strategy for the modulation of targets and pathways;
  • Supervise in vitro pharmacology teams consisting of PhD and non-PhD scientists, contributing to all drug discovery projects;
  • Stay aware of scientific and technological progress in terms of target modulation and guides its teams towards scientific and technical excellence in this field;
  • Follow the evolution of the scientific, competitive and technical field and propose opportunities for extra value creation for the Discovery organization;
  • Draft implementation plans related to this strategy (modulation of targets using small molecules, and alternatives) for its own department (scientific expertise and resources);
  • Monitor the development of breakthrough technologies and have a proven ability to implement cost-effective technologies together with own teams;
  • Act as an adviser to the Head Modulation Area in the field of scientific strategy, budget and resources;
  • Lead, manage and coordinate scientific teams appointed to its department, by motivating and empowering the team members;
  • Manage and coordinate the correct transition between the different discovery areas.

You will report to the Head of the Modulation Area.

Job requirements

Who are you?

For this job a PhD in Life Sciences is required, or an equivalent level through experience, with at least 10 years of industrial experience in a Drug Discovery setting. You have in-depth expertise of cellular, biochemical techniques and good insights on the different types of modulators that can be used in a drug discovery setting (such as competitive, allosteric, etc.). Next to this, you have a good understanding of protein sciences (expression, purification, X-ray crystallography, biophysical characterization of proteins and interactions), molecular biology and its use in drug discovery. In addition, you have a good understanding of small molecules, degraders and knock down technologies as drugs. Finally, you understand the needs for project progression from Hit finding to PCC i.e. development of assay cascade and its implementation. Experience with project leadership and project management is a plus.

Excellent proven leadership skills, with the ability to influence, motivate and empower people will make you succeed in your role as a director. With your strategic view, you are able to act as an advisor and influencer of top management and the teams. You are fluent in English, both written and verbally.
